DIRrebreather expedition on Viminale wreck, south Italy
The 21rst of May concluded the DIRrebreather expedition in south Italy, in Palmi, with the target to dive the 'Viminale' wreck.
The Viminale was a cruise-cargo ship sunked in 1943 during the World War II by a submarine. It is considered one of the best wreck in the Mediterranean sea.
Today the Viminale lies at -107 meters, in navigation position still in good conditions exepct for the first deck that in 2010 collapsed, reducing a bit the minimum depth at -88 meters
Because of the bad sea conditions at the beggining the dives planning was changed a bit starting with an other wonderful wreck, the cargo 'Valfiorita', called also the 'Mediterranean Thistlegorm.' The Valfiorita lies between -55 and -70meters. and was sunked always in 1943 by an english submarine, HMS Ultor. Inside the 'Valfiorita' is still possible to observe lorries, motorbikes and other equipments the ship was trasporting to North Afrika. Before dive the Viminale the international team dived also other two wrecks: Cannitello wreck in Messina channel and Pasubio an other cargo sunked always during the World War II. After tthe last one the expedition continued for the main target with the Viminale. Good conditions, nice pictures and a lot of fun for the last 3 dives.
All dives were done using ccr rebreather: HammerHead, Kiss and Megalodon.
Than you very much to the diving center 'Centro Immersioni Costa Viola' that managed all, in particular the first 3 days, really well. A big thank to Rocco Tedesco and to Beppe 'the chinese man'.
